“I’d love to come.”

I’m not sure why Lauren seems so eager to be rid of me, but I’m not letting up that easy. There’s something between us. I know she feels it too. Maybe a sort of double date will help her relax around me. Let her see that although I can be bad when the occasion calls for it, I’m really not a bad guy.

“Great, I’ll meet you guys at Miguel’s.” Kenzie waves at us both, rushing off to her car.

“Did you want to ride with her?” I ask Lauren, giving her an out no matter how badly I don’t want to. All I can think about is the next time we’re all alone. And naked. The things I want to do her… the pleasures I want to give her.

“No, that’s okay. I’ll ride with you.”

“Lauren,” I say taking her hand gently in my own, “I like you. I hope you’re not afraid of me.”

“Afraid?” Lauren shakes her head quickly no. “I just—maybe I’m a little embarrassed. I didn’t expect I’d ever see you again. And well, I don’t normally do … what we did.”

Softly, I graze her cheek with my fingertips. “I don’t either, you know. It was incredibly hot, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I really want to do it again if I’m being honest. But mostly, I just want to get to know you, Lauren.”

“There’s not much to me, really. I work. A lot.” She drops her gaze to her feet. “Sometimes, I don’t really even know why.”

I tip her chin up with my fingers, gaze fixated on her lips. I draw her lips closer to mine with agonizing slowness, giving the opportunity to tell me to stop. She doesn’t.

Our lips brush together, so much gentler than before. The tenderness is such a contrast to the hunger from earlier. I slowly deepen the kiss, running my tongue along her lips begging entry. Our tongues do a slow dance together, there in the parking lot as the tow trucker drives away. The world disappears around us. I could kiss Lauren forever.

When our lips finally break apart, I’m panting.

“Wow,” she says, the tone so much different than an hour ago when she last used that word.

“Wow is right.” I think I just kissed my future wife. “We better get to dinner.”
